Step One: Clear and Prepare the Stove Area

Start by removing any loose items from the stove top. Take away utensils, pots, pans, spice jars, or decorative items nearby. This gives you a clear workspace and prevents accidental spills or damage.

Next, make sure the stove is completely cool. Never attempt to clean a hot stove, as it can be dangerous and may cause cleaning solutions to evaporate too quickly, reducing effectiveness.

Step Two: Remove Grates and Burner Caps

For gas stoves, the grates and burner caps usually collect the most grime. Carefully lift them off and place them in a sink, bathtub, or large basin filled with hot, soapy water.

Let them soak for 15 to 20 minutes. Soaking helps soften dried-on grease and food, making scrubbing much easier later. This step alone can significantly reduce cleaning time.

Step Three: Apply Baking Soda to the Stove Top

With the grates removed, turn your attention to the stove surface itself. Sprinkle a generous layer of baking soda over the entire stove top, focusing on areas with visible grease, stains, or burnt-on residue.

Baking soda works as a natural cleaner because:

  • It gently scrubs without scratching most surfaces

  • It breaks down grease molecules

  • It absorbs odors

This step sets the foundation for deep cleaning without damaging your stove.

Step Four: Scrub Gently but Thoroughly

Using a scrubbing pad or brush, begin scrubbing the baking soda into the stove surface using circular motions. Apply moderate pressure, especially on heavily soiled areas. You’ll notice the baking soda forming a paste as it mixes with grease and moisture.

Take your time during this step. The goal is to lift grime without rushing. For stubborn stains, allow the baking soda to sit for a few minutes before scrubbing again.

Step Five: Add White Vinegar for Extra Cleaning Power

Once the stove has been scrubbed with baking soda, it’s time to introduce white vinegar. Pour vinegar into a spray bottle and lightly spray it over the baking soda-covered surface.

The vinegar will react with the baking soda, creating a gentle fizzing action. This reaction helps loosen grease and break down residue that’s stuck to the surface.

Let the mixture sit for 5 to 10 minutes. This resting period allows the cleaning agents to do the hard work for you.

Step Six: Scrub Again and Watch the Grime Lift Away

After the vinegar has had time to work, return with your scrubbing pad or brush. Scrub the stove top again, focusing on areas that previously resisted cleaning.

At this stage, most grime should come off easily. If some spots remain stubborn, apply a bit more baking soda and vinegar and repeat the process.

Step Seven: Rinse and Wipe Down the Surface
